Luis is one of six youth currently enrolled in a sustainable agriculture training program at Joshua Farm. He and the other guys come twice a week after school to learn the vocabulary, theory, and practice of sustainable agriculture. Our first unit is on germination and seed starting, which of course includes a hands-on component, as well as experiments with different propagation media and temperatures for germinating. Next week we’ll plant sugar snap peas and use some seeds in the kitchen–popcorn, sunflower seeds, and sprouted wheat. We’re having a good time getting to know each other and participating in the growing cycle. The greenhouse is showing many signs of life!
