Trip to the hardware store: Spring clamps

Managing a hose

Managing a hose

As we’ve mentioned before, simple, versatile, inexpensive tools and solutions are what we like to use. Continuing our series of post about great things to pick up at the hardware store, we present spring clamps.

Often used in wood and metalworking, spring clamps provide a moderate amount of grip within the jaw of the tool and can be quickly rearranged when needed. At the Joshua Farm we use them to manage hoses and cables as well as to hold plastic and shade clothe to protect crops. We use metal spring clamps with rubber ends because they last longer than those made of plastic. At under $5 a piece they are a bargain. Some days it feels like the whole farm is held together with spring clamps and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing!

Moving on

At the end of June, Dan will be leaving the Joshua Farm to pursue other farming opportunities. Since January he has been involved in developing our crop plan and trying new production ideas as well as everything else that goes on on the farm.

The primary contacts for the farm will be Kirk Hallett, Joshua Group Director and Isaac Wynn, Joshua Farm Production Manager. Please give them your support in this time of transition!

Trip to the hardware store: Cement mixing tray

Cement mixing tray for filling and seeding flats

Things on the farm are generally dirty, disorderly, or both. To help control some of this, we use plastic cement/all purpose mixing trays.

These rectangular, black plastic trays cost less than $10 each and are good for filling and seeding flats of plants, collecting screened compost, for gathering weeds from the field, or for bottom watering thirsty flats, among many other uses. Trays hold one 10″ x 20″ flat perfectly as well as one standard 2 cubic foot bag of potting soil. We have at least four in use around the farm right now.

Portable, versatile, and inexpensive, who could ask for anything more?
